UPSC CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION (UPSC CSE) EXAM 2022

The Civil Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India, an autonomous entity established in 1950 under Article 315 of the Constitution of India. Every year, the UPSC conducts examinations for recruitment to the Indian Civil Service for posts given below

The number of vacancies to be filled on the result of the examination is expected to be approximately 861 which includes 34 vacancies reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability Category,
i.e. 7 vacancies for candidates of (a) blindness and low vision; 11 Vacancies for (b) deaf and hard of hearing; 8 Vacancies for (c) locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy; and 8 Vacancies for (e) multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses (a) to (c) including deaf-blindness. 

Plan of UPSC CS Examination 

The UPSC Civil Services examination will consist of two successive stages

(i) Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination;

(ii) Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various services and posts.

Applications are now invited for the UPSC Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination only.

Candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified for admission to the Civil services (Main) Examination will have to apply online again, in the Detailed Application Form which would be made available to them. The UPSC CS Main Examination is likely to be held in September, 2021.

(iii) Those who are selected in the UPSC CS main examination are eligible to appear before the Interview Board.

Civil Services Aptitude test (CSAT) 

CSAT shall now comprise of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each and of two hours duration each. The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.

The UPSC CS Main Written Examination is only for candidates who have been short listed through the UPSC CS Preliminary CSAT Written Examination. This exam consists of seven papers. Paper on Indian languages (250 marks), English (300 marks), General Studies–I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society) (250 Marks), General Studies (three papers each of 250 marks) and any two optional subjects chosen by the candidate (each having two papers of 250 marks each) and a Personality Test (275 Marks).

Languages are: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu

Optional Subjects for the Main Examination: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology, History, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science & International Relations, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology, Literature of one of the following languages:

Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Santhali,Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, English. 
Successful candidates in the Main Examination are required to appear for an mentioned above for Interview, which is the final stage of selection.

UPSC CSE Eligibility Criteria

Nationality
i. Only Indian nationals are eligible for Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS).
ii. For other services a candidate can be either of the following :
      a. a citizen of India,
      b. a subject of Nepal,
      c. a subject of Bhutan,
      d. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
      e. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Burma, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Vietnam, Zaire or Zambia with the intention of permanently settling in India. Candidates belonging to either categories of b., c., d. or e., must produce an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India. Those who belong to either of b., c., or d., categories are not eligible for appointment to the Indian Foreign Service.

UPSC CSE Educational Qualifications

    * A degree of any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be a Deemed University under the UGC Act, 1956, or an equivalent qualification.

    * Candidates who have appeared or intend to appear for the qualifying examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear for the Preliminary Examination. All such candidates who qualify to appear for the Civil Services Main Examination must produce proof of having passed the said examination along with their application for the Main Examination.

    * The UPSC may in exceptional cases treat a candidate without the foregoing requisite qualification as an eligible candidate if he / she has passed an examination conducted by other institutions, the standard of which justifies his / her admission in the opinion of the Commission.

    * Candidates with professional and technical qualifications recognised by the Government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees. 

    * Candidates who have passed the final year of MBBS or any Medical Examination but are yet to complete the internship can also appear for the Main Examination. However they must submit along with their Main Examination application, a certificate from the concerned authority of the University / Institution that they have passed the final professional medical examination. At the Interview stage they must then produce a certificate from a competent authority that they have completed (including internship) all the requirements for the award of the Medical Degree.

UPSC CSE Age Limit 

i. A candidate must have attained 21 years and not be over 32 years on 1st August 2022 i.e., he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1990 and not later than 1st August, 2001

ii. The upper age limit is relaxed in specific cases as mentioned below :
      a. upto a maximum of 5 years if the candidate belongs to SC/ST.
      b. upto a maximum of 3 years if the candidate belongs to Other Backward Classes.

      c. upto a maximum of 3 years in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled during hostilities with foreign countries or in a disturbed area and consequently released.
      d. upto a maximum of 5 years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs / SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on August 1 of the year of examination and have been released:
          - on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from August 1 of the year of examination) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or
          - on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service, or
          - on invalidment.

      e. upto a maximum of 5 years in the case of ECOs / SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment (5 years Military Service) as on August 1 of the year of examination and whose assignment has been extended beyond 5 years. Such candidates will have to provide a certificate from the Ministry of Defence stating that they can apply for civil employment and they will be released on a notice of 3 months, upon selection, from the date of receipt of offer of appointment.

      f. upto a maximum of 10 years in the case of blind, deaf-mute and orthopaedically handicapped candidates.   

Number of UPSC CSE Attempts : 

(a) Every candidate appearing at the UPSC CS examination who is otherwise eligible, shall be permitted six attempts at the examination. Number of attempts FOR OBC (9), PwBD (9). Provided that this restriction on the number of attempts will not apply in the case of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates who are otherwise eligible. for more information visit upsc.gov.in

UPSC CSE Physical Standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Civil Services Examination, 2022 as per guidelines given in Appendix-III of Rules for Examination published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 2ND Feb, 2021

How to Apply UPSC Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (UPSC CSE) 2022 :
Candidates are required to apply UPSC CSE online using the website
http://www.upsconline.nic.in Detailed instructions for filling up online applications are available on the above mentioned website.

The facility of withdrawal of Application is available for those candidates who do not want to appear for Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination.

UPSC CSE Application Fee : Candidates (excepting  Female/SC/ST/Persons with Benchmark Disability Candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees One Hundred only) either by remitting the money in any Branch of State Bank of India

or by using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card

or by using Internet Banking of SBI.

Applicants who opt for Pay by Cash mode should print the system generated Pay-in-slip during part II registration and deposit the fee at the counter of SBI Branch on the next working day only. Pay by Cash mode will be deactivated at 11.59 P.M.of 21st Feb, 2022 i.e.one day before the closing date; however  applicants who have generated their Pay-in-Slip before it is deactivated may pay at the counter of SBI Branch during banking hours on the closing date. Such applicants who are unable to pay by cash on the closing date i.e. during banking hours at SBI Branch, for reasons whatsoever, even if holding valid pay-in-slip will have no other offline option but to opt for available online Debit/Credit Card or Internet Banking payment mode on the closing date i.e. till 18:00 Hours of 22nd  Feb, 2022

If any candidate who took the Civil Services Examination held in 2021 wishes to apply for admission to this examination, he/she must submit his/her application
without waiting for the results or an offer of appointment.
Candidates admitted to the Main Examination will be required to pay a further fee of Rs. 200/-(Rupees Two hundreds only).


UPSC CSE e-Admit Card: The eligible candidates shall be issued an e-Admit Card three weeks before the commencement of the examination.  The e-Admit Card will be made available on the UPSC website [www.upsc.gov.in] for downloading by candidates.  No Admit Card will be sent by post.
